Personal Loans for Visa Holders in Australia
You’ve got a job, steady income and a good reason to borrow, but the online form stops you at “Are you an Australian citizen or permanent resident?” It’s one of the most common frustrations we hear from visa holders. A lot of lenders do lend to temporary residents; they just don’t advertise it. We know which ones they are. More options are on our personal loan broker page.
What lenders look at
- Your visa subclass. Work visas such as the 482 and 494 are widely accepted. Bridging, student and some graduate visas are harder, but not impossible.
- Time left on your visa. Many lenders won’t let the loan run past your visa’s expiry date, so a short visa means a shorter term and higher repayments.
- Your job. Usually permanent employment in Australia, often with a minimum time in the role.
- Your Australian credit history. If you’re new, you may not have one. That’s normal, and some lenders allow for it.
Your living costs, including rent and any money you send home.
Tips to improve your chances
- Apply once, through a broker, rather than to several lenders yourself. Rejections leave a trail.
- Get an Australian phone contract or credit card and pay it on time to start building a credit file.
- Keep your visa grant letter, passport, payslips and employment contract ready.
- If you’re buying a car, a secured car loan may be easier to get approved than an unsecured personal loan.
Be careful with “easy approval” lenders
If a lender promises approval without looking at your income, read the fees and rate closely. High-cost short-term loans can trap borrowers who are already new to the country.
Visa Holder Personal Loan: frequently asked questions
Can I get a personal loan on a 482 visa?
Yes, many lenders accept 482 visa holders with stable Australian income.
Can I get one on a student visa?
It’s difficult because of work-hour limits, but a small number of lenders consider it. Ask us.
What if my visa expires soon?
The loan term may be limited to your remaining visa period. If your next visa is already lodged, tell us; some lenders take that into account.
